Maternity & newborn photography is one of the most meaningful investments a mother can make and one of the most overlooked. Because here is what I see all the time: mom is behind the camera. She is the one capturing every milestone, every messy morning, every first smile. But she is rarely in the frame. And years from now, her children will look back and wonder where she was.
This is not about snapshots on your phone. Maternity & newborn photography is about timeless artwork that includes you, so you can remember how deeply you loved and how beautifully you showed up in this season.
I have worked with families in Central Oregon for over twenty years, and the one thing I hear most from mothers looking back is that they wish they had more portraits of themselves with their children. Not less. More.
That feeling is worth paying attention to. This post walks through everything you need to know about planning your session, from timing to style to what to expect, so when the time comes, you feel ready.
Why Maternity & Newborn Photography Matters
Pregnancy feels endless from the inside. But the specific feeling of it, the weight of your belly in the third trimester, the way you look at your partner before everything is about to change, the quiet of those final weeks – those details begin to soften before you even realize they are going.
A maternity portrait session is not about looking perfect or having the right outfit. It is about creating a record of this version of you: the one who was carrying your child, who was on the edge of something amazing, who showed up beautifully even when she felt far from it.
These portraits become something your child will treasure one day, too. They are proof that they were wanted, anticipated, and loved before they ever arrived.

When to Schedule Your Maternity & Newborn Photography Session
Timing makes a real difference in how your portraits turn out, and it is one of the first things I walk clients through during our consultation.
Maternity Photography: The Right Window
The ideal time for a maternity portrait session is between 28 and 32 weeks. At this point, your belly is beautifully round, and you still have the energy to enjoy the experience. I typically recommend not waiting past 36 weeks, as babies have a way of arriving on their own schedule, and moms are typically just ready to give birth!
If you are hoping to book with my studio, I suggest reaching out during your first or second trimester so we can plan ahead. Sessions book out quickly, especially in the fall, and I want to make sure we have space for you.
Newborn Photography: Two Distinct Windows
Newborns change faster than almost anything else in life. In a matter of weeks, the tiny curled-up version of your baby that you brought home, the one who feels like the beginning of a whole new stage of life, becomes a smiling, alert baby who already feels like a different person than the one you brought home.
Both stages are worth documenting. But they are different, and timing matters.
For sleepy newborn sessions, the ideal window is within the first two weeks of birth, when babies are still deeply sleepy and curl naturally into those gentle, tucked positions.
For lifestyle newborn sessions – like the in-home sessions I offer here in Bend – the window is more flexible, often between two weeks and two months. At this age, babies are more alert and expressive, and the session captures what life actually looks like in those early weeks: feeding, snuggling, reading together on the couch. Real and unhurried and full of the small details that will not last. You can see an example of this approach in Lindsey’s lifestyle newborn session here in Bend.

Studio vs. In-Home Maternity & Newborn Photography: Which Is Right for You?
One of the most common questions I hear is whether to do a studio session or an in-home lifestyle session. Both are beautiful. They simply tell different stories.
A studio session offers complete control over lighting, backdrop, and environment. It works beautifully regardless of what your home looks like and creates timeless portraits with a clean, intentional aesthetic. This is often the right choice for families who want classic newborn images or who are not sure their home has the light or space for an in-home session.
An in-home lifestyle session is ideal when your home has good natural light and a calm, uncluttered environment. The images feel like a window into your real life – your actual couch, your actual morning, your actual family in the space where you are living this season. Many families in Central Oregon choose this option because they love how personal and documentary it feels.
During your consultation, we will talk through which approach makes the most sense for your family.

What These Portraits Are Really For
Whether we are working in the studio or in your home, my focus is always the same: connection over perfection. I am not looking for forced smiles or stiff poses. I am looking for the way you hold your baby, the way your partner looks at you, the way your toddler climbs up to get closer.
Those are the moments that become the images you will return to again and again. Not because they are perfect, but because they are true.
The portraits we create together are designed to live in your home – as framed prints on your walls, as heirloom albums on your coffee table, as something your family can see and touch every day. I call them proof of how it felt. Because that is exactly what they are.

A Note to the Mom Who Is Waiting
If you have been thinking about scheduling a session and something keeps holding you back, you are not alone. I hear it often.
“I want to wait until I feel better in my body.” “I’ll wait until things settle down.” “I’m not sure I’ll feel comfortable in front of the camera.”
I understand all of it. And I want you to know: none of those things need to be resolved before you reach out. My job is to guide you through this in a way that feels easy and comfortable, not one more thing to manage. Many of my clients tell me they almost talked themselves out of booking, and that their session ended up being one of their favorite experiences of the whole year.
You do not need to feel camera-ready. You just need to show up. I will take care of the rest.
